Garvie, Sept of Clan MacLean
Family tradition maintains that the Garvies of Perthshire, Scotland are descended from John Garbh, seventh MacLean of Coll, through one of his sons, probably John of Totaronald. This son was wounded at the Battle of Inverkeithing in 1651, and did not return to Coll. His three sons (or grandsons) John, James and Patrick rented Upper Balgarvie, Lower Balgarvie, and Mill of Balgarvie in the parish of Scone, Perthshire from the Earl of Mansfield. Their descendants were tenants of Muitown, Haggis Hall and several other farms near Perth.
The largest branch of Garvies in southern and central Africa are descended from Laurance Garvie (1845-1918), the son of John Garvie and Janet Luke of Forteviot and Aberdalgie, Perthshire, Scotland, and Johanna Sutherland (1843-1928) from Latheron, Caithness, Scotland.
